OUGD505 - What is good - Embossing plate

For the research book I wanted to use a technique of embossing to test it for the real invites, this is taken from the wedding invite samples that I discussed in the book

Images

To use or not to use

The outcome was perfect, the process of the blind emboss requires no ink in its production therefore keeping costs for the client down and gives a great tactile finish.

The binding also came out great with a wool, the colour of the wool is not the correct choice, the colour of the cover works well with the blind emboss but I will not be using it for the final pieces.

OUGD505 - Type session - concertina

For the purpose of the workshops, we have done a mini crit on each others work. My feedback is below, based on work done to date on the 16 page booklet.

Crit feedback

Make a physical copy of it.
Make the pop out sections only part of the document, no the main focus.
Create like the actual invites.
Keep the same detail in the content, but ensure legibility
Make it interesting
Make space for foiling etc

Work from my peers

Having the white space allows for more imagery or simply to increase the legibility of a large amount of body copy. Decreasing the point size has kept as much information as possible but allowed the user to have a break from reading large amounts of copy.

Here is the new layout of my concertina before going to pre-print.

OUGD505 - What is Good - Couple

Online pinterest for quiet times at wedding,

Idea behined it

The aim of the Pinterest is to get everyone at the wedding viewing an online scrapbook of the happy couple, this will introduce those at the wedding to Pinterest as a fun place to share and post ideas of celebrations, DIY and craft which is all present in the invite pack.

I have taken the decision to leave out websites such as tumblr and Facebook as I believe these websites take much of the fun of learning something new away from the idea. All of the guests used these websites already therefore I want to introduce them to a new social media place, much like the development of a new way of life.

OUGD505 - What is Good - Script Typeface

After the recent workshops and research into hand rendered type, I have begun crafting a typeface based on script lettering.

Progress

Initial sketch work has allowed me to flow the type easily for a relaxed look, for the first stages I am abandoning baselines and x-heights, I would rather get a feel for the type at this point before I add any rules to it.

This typeface is hand sketched but I would like to begin to touch it up using illustrator and expanding the type for scalability, this will be used at very small point sizes and not used in Fontographer.

The O glyph is the most important for me in this type, having the counter slightly larger to the left of the axis helps make the type look hand rendered and relaxed in its appearance. This will hopefully give the counter shape to all the other letters.

Each glyph is separate, allowing me to manipulate the lettering to create various ligatures between the letters.

Almost completed one version of the type in use for Nathaniel, several glyphs are off and need tweaking but overall it is looking much better than I anticipated. I have used a rough structure with a baseline and X-hieght, the Cap height is very large at this stage.

Final

Each letter has deviated slightly from the main typeface I created which allows for various ligatures for an erganomic feel, the final typeface is featured below.

OUGD503 - Collabo - Ted Baker

Brief

Concept
Launch in India

Reason
Emerging economy
Great political and financial relations with UK

Goal
To get the public sharing Ted Baker clothing by tweeting images of a purchase at the POS.

How
At till point consumer tweets a pic of what they have just bought which is then shown instantly in a "twinned" store such as Knightsbridge, London.

An exhibition cricket game is played using England vs. India with Ted Baker tailored uniforms.

A tea break area introduces the English ideal by bringing the two teams together under two branded gazebos and a shared dining area at the team change overs.

Why
Giving a free exhibition game will get instant world wide exposure through the media.
Fashion sharing is popular and will advertise the new and existing stores.
Ted Baker can break into a lucrative high end sport which is watched by the fashion brands demographic.

Development

"Hang on, that looks an awful lot like Futura Medium..."

after playing around with kerning and width of the characters, it was discovered by myself and David that the ted Baker logotype is in fact, Futura Medium with 550 kern and at 75% of original width.

Using Twitters

A delicious stock image of a London billboard at night, perfect for photoshoping!

When working out the dimensions and layout of the billboard adverts, 2 structures were decided. We had to take into consideration the fact that people will buy multiple items as well as single pieces.

Removing the Next branding from the store will allow me to place the Ted Baker logo in, showing the location of the billboards to the stores.

OUGD505 - What is Good - Pinterest

pinterest for the crafty couple...

summer wedding, craft lovers, pinterest is good for DIY and craft

OUGD505 - What is Good - Rationalle

Rationale

With this brief I wish to explore the area of wedding stationary and the use of crafts when producing to a budget. The element of typography is something I wish to explore with the creation of a typeface for the wedding and any possible future collateral, hand rendered type will add a touch of personality to the invites.

The final resolution should reflect something of industry standard that can be produced on a scale of 80 - 100 invites, there will also be a hand made guest book also produced to industry standard using techniques that will be informed by the production of a 16 page research booklet.

Understanding the limitations of producing this brief will help me to focus on techniques and processes that I will not be able to use such as commercial foil blocking or using special inks such as scented ink. There are further potential limitations of using processes at the Vernon Street site such as free slots and producing work in a multi disciplinary studio with a limited number of staff however this will only strengthen my independent studies.

Having a proof reader present which is not the client will allow for and copywriting issues such as grammar and language, the client could be bias towards a particular tone of voice.

By creating everything by hand there will be a reflection of the couples interests in DIY and craft reinforced through with the possibility of a digital or online element to the day. The target audience are mostly tech illiterate, therefore the issue of digital image sharing and blogging will be considered.

The packaging and distribution of the invite will need to be strong in concept and production, there is aspects of paper craft and 3D pop up to each invite therefore ensuring each recipient gets a well constructed invite will be the key to it’s overall success.
