OUGD505 - Type Workshops - Typeface

Using the Fibonaci sequence to determine the point sizes of type. Use the ratio and apply it to the size of your page to get the type sizes correct for the page size.

Paper size

1.62 is the golden number

to get the golden section of your page, no matter the size, divide the page by 1.62, this will dictate how you can build a grid.

I have used circles to act as guides when creating the stem around the counter. This allows for the ascender height to x height ratio to be created or at least thought about.

Using the stem width for the angle on the finial has given me a consistant rule to follow through all the letter

By using the rules of each of the parts of the letterform I have smoothed and rounded each corner of the serif on the letter "a", this will be repeated across a whole typeface creating small element of consistency across what I believe will be a messy and interesting typeface.

Finished letter form

The letter form is legible at several sizes from small to large showing how it can work at all scales.

Full typeface - "Messy Serif Regular"

I have created this typeface for the purpose of a younger target audience, the nature of the serifs and size of the counter space in each glyph provides a hint of inconsistency. The most challenging glyph was the "S" due to fitting it into the smaller space of the x-hieght rather than the Cap height which the "A" uses for it's ascender.

Upon reflection I have fully enjoyed creating this typeface, there are a fe small tweaks to be made with the vector forms of some of the stems, however I believe I could see this working on toy packaging or printed adverts.
